Master Glass Cutter
Cary S. Ferguson
|
|
Cary first became interested in cut and beveled glass as a teen. Intrigued by the way the light played with the beveled and cut glass windows in a friend’s home, Ferguson determined to learn to make these works of art himself. As with all good things, they take time and glass cutting is no exception.
The young man was persistent and eventually persuaded Walter Langan (1892-1983), a master glass cutter in Cleveland, to show him the ropes. Ferguson proved to be a worthy apprentice and the two worked together for ten years before Langan passed.
Ornate and heavily cut windows are only the beginning. The artist began to apply his skills to other glass and crystal...vases, stemware, bowls...and eventually to the spectacular optical crystal sculptures for which he has been internationally recognized.
Most recently, Ferguson was invited to participate in a worldwide Engraved Glass Exhibition in London, England, a distinction only 60 of the world’s finest cut glass artists can claim. “The Eyes Are the Window to the Soul” was created for this exhibit, and is now on display in the Ferguson Gallery.
Using the spinning grindstones, a tradition over a century old, glass and crystal are hand cut, beveled, and polished to a dazzling sparkle in the on site studio where visitors can watch the work in progress.

In 2006, Ferguson Gallery added a glass blowing studio and with it a new artist, Cary Ferguson, Jr. This has added a new dimension to the gallery, with colorful blown glass in the form of vases, bowls, perfume bottles and marbles, just to name a few. Father and son often collaborate on a piece, such as the popular Fanta"Sea" vases and bowls, where fish and other sea life are hand cut into a hand blown vessel. You can see these on our website under the Hand Blown Glass link. Visitors to the gallery are able to view glass blowing demonstrations and watch as the artists transform molten glass into a spectacular work of art right before their eyes.
